Industry Profile: Marc Dottore

— By Jane Cohen and Bob Grossweiner

Manager Marc Dottore recently struck out on his own and opened M. Dottore Management, where he represents longtime client Kathy Mattea and Celtic group Cherish The Ladies.

Marc got his start in the music business in 1980 in the Washington, D.C. area where he worked with local groups, doing lights and production for hundreds of shows from small clubs to large arenas. His first "real road gig" was in 1985 with Eddie Rabbitt where he handled lights and eventually moved into road management. From 1985-94, in addition to Rabbitt, Marc worked with George Strait, Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers. In 1991 Marc began working with Kathy Mattea and spent the first three years with her on the road as her tour manager and lighting designer.

Marc joined Titley/Spalding & Associates in 1994, and worked with them for the past eight years as well as TBA Entertainment for three-and-a-half of those years when Titley/Spalding & Associates merged with TBA.

Last month, Marc opened his own management company and relocated to Kentucky where his office is only about 35 minutes to Music Row. Joining Marc is fellow TBAer Don London, who handles the day-to-day of Cherish The Ladies. "A couple of my favorite companies to work with these days are located far away from the accepted music centers in the U.S.," Marc says." My experience is that these companies are much more focused and do a better job. I think that in part, that has to do with not being in the middle of the circus all the time."

Why did you decide now to strike out on your own?
The timing is really right for independent minded business strategies. The big company model is too reminiscent of the 1990's boom. Companies were constructed to create higher and higher share prices but did so at the expense of the core business. Today's model needs to be lean and responsive. If you keep your overhead down and focus on a realistic agenda there is profit to be had and you get to have a life as well.

TBA is a company that is scaled to service big projects and they do a very good job. At the same time, the number of projects that really explode are becoming fewer and fewer. So at a certain point I made the decision that it made more sense to center on the core of my business, the artists themselves, and let go of the larger facade of the big company. Consolidation in media outlets is a given in our time. We can lament it all we want; it's just a fact. But it also creates bigger and bigger expectations of the content it helps bring forth to the consumer. That means more and more people are hired to work the next mega project. If that falls flat or if it's an off year, the entire company or in some cases the entire industry is affected.

A lot of people lament the mainstream treadmill. In the last few years more and more of those people have put their money where their mouth is and started their own companies. Some of those are very well run operations that have survived the landscape and come up with a profitable business model based on serving artists as artists and not as commodities.

How have your experiences as a tour manager and lighting helped you as a manager?
I think they give me a broader perspective, which makes me a better manager. From the manager's seat you see the entire perspective and you play a strong hand in shaping the agenda. Once you start doing that, you understand that this is best place to be.

What are some of the challenges facing the country music industry today?
Creating true stars. Country has a history of launching long-term careers. Today the artist development process has been reduced to nothing. We launch stuff at the public, spend way too much money and then move on quickly to the next thing. I think the industry is hemorrhaging money with a one-size-fits-all marketing plan. Better to take longer, spend money wisely and build an artist's career over the life of multiple projects and initiatives. Also payoffs at radio are the worst they have ever been, it's just something we are stuck with.

How has management changed over the last few years in dealing with major labels vs. independents?
Budgets! Majors throw 90 percent of their money at radio. Indies have to take a longer road and use touring and print media. They just can't compete on a fair playing field with radio.

What types of unique strategies are you employing to keep Kathy Mattea visible in the marketplace?
Kathy songs really connect to people. At her core, she is really a folk artist. So we have just taken her to the marketplace that seems to make the most sense for her now. Kathy works Fall-Spring now. She will finish up her current tour dates at the end of April. Taking this coming summer off, she should do about 60 dates late September '03 -- early May'04. We have a Christmas record and tour in the works as well.

What are Cherish The Ladies' strongest markets?
Cherish works over 100 shows a year. Their schedule is a mix of PAC and Symphony dates along with the more traditional festivals and clubs that support Irish Music. They have been out there for almost 15 years and hey have a great reputation amongst the fans of Irish Music.

What role do you see digital video playing in artist development?
I think digital video is going to play a larger and larger role in the artist development process. Cheaply made DVDs and enhanced content on CDs will continue to become increasingly popular because the means of production is getting cheaper and cheaper. I don¹t think it¹s a stretch to look down the road and see DVD taking over the format and CDs fading away. The basic music product has not changed much over the years. It's still a collection of 10-12 songs on a disk. We went from wax, to vinyl, to tape, to CD, but the concept has not changed much. I think DVD with its capacity can blow that wide open. Everything else we compete with -- games, movies, computers and software - are always changing and evolving. Music has to do the same to compete. I think video in the hands of the artists themselves will help that along.

How do you feel about free downloading of music?
No surprise I guess, I am all for it. I read an article in this very publication advocating the idea that every label should scrap the fancy home pages and just create a download page. One song from every artist on the label, free, with no strings attached. A single for the Internet! Take all that money that you would pay to radio promotions and give the writers and publishers their fair share, spend the rest on targeted promotions that reach out directly to the consumer. I still think people will want the full collection with all the packaging, mastered and sequenced. And with enhanced content you give people that much more reason to buy. More and more conversation in the indie world seems to be embracing this idea. The Internet empowers the little guy and whacks at the knees of giants. I think this issue will be the thing that really reshapes the record company business model in the next 10 years.

Mac or PC?
I have made the full-time leap this year from PC to Mac. I was one of those people who were PC by day and Mac by night. With the intro of Office X for Mac there are no more interfacing problems with the outside world. The best reason for music professionals to go Mac is that it is so much easier to develop multimedia content like, digital video, web mailers, web sites, etc.

Any downside having your company in Kentucky and not in Nashville?
No. I tell people it's like a NY/NJ thing. I am only 35 minutes from Music Row. For years a number of country music artists and managers worked out of the Hendersonville area. This is only slightly further out and offers an environment that is much more cost effective than Nashville to work in. By keeping my company overhead low, I am better able to advise and serve the artists without the conflict of interest that comes from having big bills to meet every month. So much of our daily business is conducted via email and on the phone that you can be just about anywhere and be easily reachable. That fact that you and your co-writer live in cities that are a thousand miles apart and your doing this interview with me in a third location, is a very good demonstration of how business really gets done these days.

First industry job
I started in the Washington D.C. area music scene with local groups. It was a very vibrant scene with people like The Nighthawks, Kix, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Danny Gatton. I did lights and production for hundreds of shows around D.C., everything from small clubs to large arena venues. We also did a number of shows in government buildings, museums, on military bases and at embassies. This was all from 1980-1986.

Career highlights
My first real road gig was in 1985 with Eddie Rabbitt. From 1985-94 I did lights and production and then road management for Eddie, George Strait, Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers, and then Kathy Mattea. I started with Kathy in 1991 and spent the first three years on the road as her tour manager and lighting designer.

From '94 on, I worked for Titley Spalding and helped put out a half dozen Kathy Mattea records. I think I have helped Kathy find a unique way to stay viable in today's scene. That's something I am very proud of.

I signed Cherish The Ladies featuring Joanie Madden in late 2000 and she has been a joy to work with. Cherish has opened my eyes to the power of niche music. People love Irish music and these girls are one of the top 3 groups in that market.

Last year I also was very involved in putting out Terri Clark's current CD "Pain To Kill" It looks like it is going to be a very successful record. Clarence Spalding and I really quarterbacked that project. I am proud that it has worked so well for Terri and TBA.

Career disappointment
I have worked with a few artists that were their own worst enemies. It's a shame, because they are always very talented. They just can't stay focused on the music.

Greatest challenge
I have made the decision to start my own independent company in a time when the industry is consolidating at a faster and faster rate. I am betting that I can compete and attract new clients based on 20+ years of experience, without the fancy nameplate on the door, or the Music Row address. My challenge is to make experience speak louder than façade.

Best business decision
Well, I hope it's the decision to leap from the nest and start my own business, but it's too early to tell on that front. I think mostly it's been associating myself with good people who enjoy music and know how to work hard. It can be hard, but sometimes you have to walk away from something to make the next thing happen. My entire career has been that way, when the time was right, the next step or opportunity reveals itself. I trust that part of my instinct.

Best advice you received
If you work projects for the right reasons and do the client's business like it was your own, the money will follow.

Best advice to offer
The more consolidated our industry becomes, the more opportunity exists in the places the consolidators ignore. The Internet is by no means dead, the techno bubble bursting will be the best thing that ever happens for the technology and I think for the music. Oh yeah, buy a Mac!

Most memorable industry experience
Like everyone in this deal, you get to have a number of peak experiences. The most memorable would have to be playing a gig for President Clinton at the White House. After the show he invited all three groups working on the show, artists, crew and yes, even managers, up to the residence for drinks and a personal tour of the second floor of the White House. We were there for about an hour and a half and I will never forget it.

What friends would be surprised to learn about you
I am very involved in the DV, Digital Video revolution. I have a great camera and Mac editing system. My main passion is of course music. I have created a number of little short clips that feature music by friends, both known and unknown. I have just finished a long form video on the "making of" Kathy Mattea's last album ROSES, which will soon be up on her Web site. The revolution in video technology that is happening is very much like the one that happened in the audio world over the last 10 years. Now more and more bands can afford their own video gear and can create video clips for themselves. I see more and more of this content showing up on the artists' CD or DVD and on Web sites.

Industry pet peeve
"In this climate," "in this environment," these are phrases used by people to say why something can not happen. It's fearful and it's lazy. When someone starts a conversation with this, the conversation is over for me.

Office paraphernalia
I own this small old house that I bought and restored specifically to use as an office. It was built around 1860 and has architectural detail in it that is far beyond what you would think you would find in a place this small. So there is a small pile of tools and repair materials in the corner at all times. I work from the old, very grand, living room and it is full of CDs and a good stereo. Most of the furniture in here is vintage with a few great chairs thrown in. Someone described this office as junkyard elegance. One thing I don't have is record plaques hanging on the wall. Those go in the bathroom, which is the right place to ponder your accomplishments. In my office I try to make it about the future.

If I wasn't doing this, I would be...
… out on the road, in some theater, doing lights for someone.

Industry mentor(s)
Right off the top I would say Bob Titley and Clarence Spalding. I worked with them longer than I have worked with any other company. I'd say I very much reflect their style. A few label execs have really helped me along, John Grady (Mercury, now running DMZ) and Van Fletcher (Virgin Nashville, now at Universal South). Keith Miller at William Morris really educated me on the touring world and the needs of buyers.
