With almost 40 years of experience Britain’s "Whispering" Bob Harris is one of the giants of contemporary music broadcasting.

From his days at daytime Radio 1 in the ‘70s as well as hosting BBC 2’s influential TV music program “The Old Grey Whistle Test” the same decade to currently being a figurehead personality at Radio 2, Harris has been a fierce champion of gifted new artists while continuing to acknowledge stylistic trailblazers.

Along the way, the 62-year-old co-founded Time Out magazine; authored two rock history books; wrote the autobiography, “The Whispering Years”; produced albums; and voiced countless radio and television documentaries.

The Radio Academy, dedicated to the encouragement, recognition and promotion of excellence in UK broadcasting and audio production, awarded Harris with an award in 2003 for Outstanding Contribution to Music Radio. As well, the Country Music Association in Nashville honored him with the International Broadcaster of the Year award in 2004.

Like so many British kids in the late 1950s, Harris’ introduction to pop radio broadcasting was through Radio Luxembourg. It was hearing DJs Alan Freeman, David Jacobs and Jimmy Saville broadcasting from studios in “Luxembourg City” (shows often pre-recorded in the company's studios at 38 Hertford Street, London) across the night time void into the tiny transistor radio tucked under his pillow in his home in Northampton, England.

It was while listening to Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers on Radio Luxembourg that Harris decided that playing music on the radio was what he wanted to doing his life.

At 12, Harris got his first Dansette record player, then a Decca stereogram and a Grundig tape machine. He had started collecting records, and he began producing radio programs onto his Grundig tape machine.

On leaving school, however, Harris followed in his father's footsteps and joined the police force as a cadet. Two years later, he left the police, and moved to London. He arrived in London spilling hundreds of vinyl singles and his Decca stereogram into a small Hampstead bed-sit.

In 1967, the pirate radio stations knocked aside BBC Radio 1 and Radio Luxemburg. Harris was drawn to Wonderful Radio London, impressed with such DJs as Kenny Everett, and Tony Blackburn, and its playlist that featuring tracks by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Kinks, the Small Faces.

Like many, Harris was taken by the innovative music program “The Perfumed Garden” and its colorful host, John Peel. With many other ex-pirate radio DJs, Peel was snapped up by BBC Radio 1, when it began broadcasting in the autumn of 1967.

Meanwhile, Harris had started writing to earn a living. He met Tony Elliott (later the two co-founded Time Out) who ran the University of Keele's student magazine Unit. Harris told Elliott that he wanted to interview John Peel and Elliot fixed it. He did the interview with Peel and they became friends. Peel introduced him to Radio 1 producer Jeff Griffin who did a pilot with Harris and submitted it to Radio 1. Harris was given his first radio gig in 1970, sitting in for Peel. Soon after, one of Radio 1's presenters resigned, and the BBC offered him the show “Sounds of the Seventies.”

Less than 18 months later, Mike Appleton, the executive producer of BBC 2’s “The Old Grey Whistle Test” tapped Harris to host BBC 2’s late-night music show, replacing Melody Maker editor Richard Williams. Launched in 1971, “Whistle Test” primarily showcased album-based artists whereas “Top Of The Pops” offered up popular chart acts.

“Whistle Test” featured many seminal acts of the era, including the first British TV performance of Bob Marley and the Wailers as well as Tim Buckley, Captain Beefheart, Talking Heads, the Ramones, and Judee Sill who, without the existence of the program, may never have been seen by a UK TV audience. It also featured the likes of Led Zeppelin, Supertramp, the Police, Lynyrd Skynyrd, David Bowie and Eric Clapton,

in 1975, Harris persuaded John Lennon in New York and unable to leave America due to immigration problems, to be interviewed. and to perform Stand By Me” and “Slippin’ & Slidin’” as part of the promotion for his “Rock ‘N’ Roll” album. It was the last musical performance Lennon gave for UK television.

In 1975, BBC 1 cancelled Harris’ “Sounds of the Seventies” show and he left “Whistle Test” in 1978. After a brief stop over at Radio Luxembourg, he worked Radio 210 in Berkshire for four years followed by working at Radio Oxford until 1984. Harris also hosted a show on the British Forces Broadcasting Service from 1986 to 1998.

In 1990, Radio 1 Controller Johnny Beerling offered Harris some part-time work. Within three months, Harris was hosting on a regular basis on the station. This came to an end three years later when BBC 1 was overhauled. Harris then jumped over to local BBC GLR (formerly Radio London).

Harris started at BBC Radio 2 in 1997. He is currently doing a Saturday night program (11pm-1am), and the weekly “Bob Harris Country” program.

Two years ago, Harris and his wife Trudie founded the Whispering Bob Broadcasting Company, an independent radio production house, producing radio documentaries for Radio 2. To date, this has included: “Maple Leaf Revolution,” “When John Met Paul,” “Who Breaks A Butterfly On A Wheel,” and “The Sandy Denny Story.”

As well, “Bob Harris Presents” has issued a series of CD compilations, featuring Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Eva Cassidy, Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, Thea Gilmore, James McMurtry, and John Prine.

You haven’t hosted “Old Grey Whistle Test” in 30 years but the program is still what you are best known for internationally.

I guess it is. And thank goodness. But I would never want to live in the past

“Whistle Test” lives on via three compilation DVDs. The lineup of acts that performed on the show would not be possible on television today. Who would have the equivalents of David Bowie, the Ramones, Bob Marley, Lynard Skynard, Tim Buckley, and Judee Sill on television today?

The engine of “Whistle Test” was new music. The engine of my (radio) programs today is new music. There is an absolute straight line between there (“Whistle Test”) and what I am doing now.

More than most people you keep current with new music. You are listening to CDs all of the time.

I don’t want to fossilize into this old geezer playing nothing but old music. And the new bands that I play are bringing with them a younger audience.

Many of the artists I play these days are, in a way, the equivalent of the kind of people we were playing 35 years ago (on “Whistle Test”). The philosophy of the music is very eclectic for all of my programming. I play music from right across the board; enduring artists that stride the decades. People say, “You used to play Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and Little Feat.” Yes, but they weren’t known then.

You were friends with Brit pop star Marc Bolan but he never performed on “Whistle Test.” Why not?

Marc always did “Top of the Pops.” There was a distinction between the two programs. “Top of The Pops” was the singles’ chart and “Whistle Test” was albums. As far as the BBC was concerned, Marc was in the “Top of the Pops” category.

You spent two days in New York interviewing John Lennon for “Whistle Test” In 1975. Your interview with him is one of the warmest I’ve seen. And he wasn’t always a warm guy.

We filmed the day he’d heard that Yoko was pregnant with Sean. So you can imagine that his mood was so light. He was so happy. The other aspect was that we got on really well. That was so fortunate. And it wasn’t like we went through a record label or layers and layers of management (to get him). He was on the phone direct (setting up the interview)

You hadn’t interviewed him previously?

I’d never met him before. And we just got on like a house on fire. We really did. I felt so comfortable with him. And I think he did with me as well. That comes across in the interview. It is so relaxed.

I understand that you had to bring John a gift from England to fulfill his contractual obligation to the BBC?

That’s true. Chocolate Oliver (biscuits). John and Yoko couldn’t get them in New York. He had been talking to Mike (Appleton) about a fee for the interview, and John said “Don’t worry about. I don’t want a fee.” Mike said, “Hold on a minute, John. This is the BBC. We have to pay you a fee.” The fee was 15 pounds. John laughed so much when he heard that. Then he said, “Okay bring me over 15 pounds’ worth of Chocolate Olivers.” That’s how it came about.

Wasn’t the interview around the time John and Paul McCartney were back talking again after years of strife?

They had just started talking again. I asked him, “How are things with Paul?” Because “How Do You Sleep” (the 1971 song that disparages former Beatles songwriting partner McCartney.) was such a harsh song. John said, “Actually I have seen Paul. We did talk.”

Through your production firm, the Whispering Bob Broadcasting Company, you did the marvelous radio special “When John Met Paul” last year. You’ve worked with Paul quite a bit over the years.

Paul and I have always had a great relationship. I first met him in 1973 outside of the BBC. He tapped me on the shoulder and introduced himself. Of course, I interviewed him several times over the years. He wrote me a letter when I lost my show on Radio 1 (in 1993). He gave me such a wonderful interview for “When John Met Paul.” It made the program. He put so much vitality into the conversation. I really like Paul.

The 1977 altercation between you and the Sex Pistols in the basement of The Speakeasy Club is infamous. The incident was on all of the front pages of the national newspapers in the U.K. The band got dropped by A&M Records four days later.

Well that was Derek Green (managing director, A&M Records UK). Derek was incensed by what had happened.

What happened?

Whenever I have read anything I’ve said about this it sounds so pathetic. It wasn’t though. We had 15 to 20 people coming towards us with bottles. My friend George Nicholson got a bottle smashed on his head and received 14 stitches. It took about 30 people to get George and I out of the club. It was scary. There was George in the reception area covered in blood. By this time the word had got out at The Roxy club nearby. Soon after we left, there was kind of a riot on that little section of Margaret Street. It was cordoned off. It was ridiculous.

The punks were then showing their distaste for Britain’s Old Music Guard including people like the Who, you and others.

It got to the point where I couldn’t go anywhere because of the hostility on the street.

The thing about punk is that you could take it back to garage rock of the ‘60s.

I also take it back to early rock and roll. Elvis doing “Heart Break Hotel” at RCA Studio 2 in Nashville were all these players just standing in the studio playing. They were the punks of their day. Hank Williams was a punk in his day.

You ridiculed the New York Dolls on “Whistle Test” in 1974.

I very famously referred to them as “mock rock” which I’ve always stuck by. If you look at them, that’s precisely what they were.

How did you get to London in 1966?

I had a friend John Bird who had moved to London, and lived in Hampstead. He was attending the Central School of Art. I had been up to visit him for a few times. So in the house there were students from the Central School of Art and the London School of Economics and there was a photographer living there. I plugged into this incredible scene and was completely seduced by it. John said, “Listen, there’s a room going free. Why don’t you come up?” So I drove home, packed, and moved to London.

How soon afterwards before you got a job at Radio 1?

Oh gosh, four years. I didn’t do a lot when I first moved to London. I didn’t know anybody in London. And all the people in the house were students. I spent a lot of time on my own in a strange city. I had my record collection, and I had my radio.

Your arrival coincided with a golden era of rock and folk music from London.

London was a magnet to people for so many reasons. By the time I arrived, there was a massively creative scene. Those few years in the mid-60s saw the emergence of an amazing roll call of British musicians in many different fields.

Who would ever think that there would be that great generation of guitarists? Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jeff Beck and Pete Townsend all arrived within moments of one another. Previously, apart from Hank Marvin and a few good session players, there wasn’t much there. Suddenly there they all were.

And while that was happening the English folk music boom gave us Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Roy Harper, Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Martin Carthy, John Martyn, Davy Graham, Al Stewart and, a few minutes later, Ralph McTell.

You didn’t do any radio work back home?

No. The upbringing I had was very provincial. My dad was a policeman. My upbringing was as far away from show business and the music industry as you could possibly get.

When you began to work at BBC 1 doing “The Seventies Show” John Peel was one of your mentors. And he also introduced you to producer Jeff Griffin?

Well, he did. I had met Tony Elliot and we were working together on Unit magazine. He commissioned me to do an interview and I said that I wanted to interview John Peel. So I go over to John’s house in Fulham and he’s there with Marc Bolan. By this time, John had gone across to Radio 1 from Radio London. He was working with (BBC 1 producers) Jeff Griffin and Bernie Andrews.

John and I became good friends and he arranged an introduction with Jeff Griffin. It was Jeff who then took me into to make a pilot for Radio 1. Then I started on Radio 1 in August 1970 with “Sounds of the ‘70s.”

Did Jeff Griffin teach the basics of programming a show? You wouldn’t have known much about production going in?

No I didn’t. I had arrived with a whole load of records in a bag. Jeff was old school BBC, a hard task master. He cared so much about programming. He wasn’t going to let me off lightly with being loose with my program. He taught me how to build a program-- how you started, and how you built a rhythm into it. He drummed into me to always start with something bright and familiar. He explained to me how to time everything. So I could build a program to allow for links but still have time to place all of the tracks without fading anything or anything getting in the way of the music. He taught me loads. All of the things he taught me, so many of them I apply to the program building that I do now. I learned 90% of it from Jeff.

You worked on Jeff’s famed BBC 1 Beach Boys tribute series in 1974 didn’t you?

My first trip to America was three weeks in LA with the Beach Boys. It was unbelievable. We went to Brian Wilson’s house. We interviewed Van Dyke Parks, and all of the Beach Boys. We traveled with them.

So you have all these interviews, and you come back to London to start editing.

I was in the control room while everything was being edited, and the programs were being put together. In those days, of course, it involved a row of reel-to-reel tape machines and an army of technicians to press buttons, splice tape, and mix.

In 1972, you were the runner-up to John Peel in the Melody Maker and NME polls. You hadn’t been in the business long.

It was all down hill from there (laughs). In 1966 when I first moved to London I went to the NME Poll Winners Concert at Wembley Stadium. It was an incredible bill with the Beatles, the (Rolling) Stones and the Small Faces. God knows how many bands played. It was pandemonium. And there I was in the audience after paying for a ticket. Six years later I’m on that stage with Mike Appleton holding aloft a cup given to us for Top Television Program for 1972 for “Old Grey Whistle Test.” From absolutely nowhere to that stage in six years was an unbelievable jump.

[The NME Poll Winners Concerts took place between 1963 and 1966. They were transmitted on British television a few weeks after they had taken place.]

Meanwhile, John Peel didn’t talk to you for over 20 years. What happened?

I never really got to the bottom of what that was all about. I tried to talk to him about it. It more or less corresponded with me starting on “Whistle Test.” I think, in my heart of hearts, it was that he disapproved of my lifestyle at the time. Here I was in the heart of rock and roll and I’d become one of the main figures (in the UK) within two or three years being in the industry. Everybody seemed to know who I am. That sort of fame goes to your head. I think it went to my head. I didn’t particularly like myself much at certain times in the mid-70s.

It was hard not to be affected with the media being so concentrated and you being successful in both radio and TV.

Yes. It takes a bit of time to get your brain around this huge position where you are in that so many people know you. The thing that got to me more than anything as I got famous was that friends who had known me all of these years suddenly treated me so different. It was really weird. It destabilizes a person. It did me for awhile.

Was it a hard fall in 1978 when you left “Old Grey Whistle Test?” Annie Nightingale took over as the host.

It wasn’t as if I lost the show. In fact, I had been saying to Mike (Appleton) six months earlier that it was probably time for me to stop. I was enjoying it less. (With) the thing with the Sex Pistol and the hostility that my appearance on TV was promoting with people I thought, “I don’t need all of this.” So I said to Mike I want to stop doing it.

My idea was to take myself out of the whole pressure of the situation. My (then) wife Val and I spent quite a bit of time in Italy. I kept my radio hand in by working on commercial radio stations here, there and everywhere. I started doing a show on British Forces Broadcasting Service which I loved. Then I sent a program to Jeff (Griffin) and he eventually got me back on Radio 1. That’s when (my career) re-started.

You were off the national broadcasting scene for a long time.

The last regular show I did on “Whistle Test” was on New Years’ Eve 1979 going into 1980. it was with Blondie at The Apollo in Glasgow. My next national show I did as a regular show was on Radio 1 on Jan. 6, 1990. So the ‘80s passed me by. Or I passed them by. The ‘80s were not a kind moment for (supporters of) acoustic music or to songs and songwriters. You had to batten down the hatches and see your way through it.

Once we got into the ’90 a number of things happened, not least of which was “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana. That was such a pivotal record and then there was Oasis and Blur. The proper bands were back. Bands had gone more basic again. The sound was rawer. They sounded more rock and roll. That’s when everything plugged back in again, I think.

You seem to have considerable freedom at the BBC.

Oh completely I think. But it’s become more bureaucratically difficult lately because the BBC is under so much pressure at the moment. I’m am amazed the BBC doesn’t stand up a bit more for itself at times. The BBC is one of the greatest broadcasting organizations in the world, ever. The freedom that you get and the way they encourage your creativity, and the working practices…all of that is unique. The BBC encourages you to be creative and be an independent thinker. They give you room to make your program the way you feel is right. I am a massive defender of the BBC.

What kind of mad man puts Lou Reed’s “Dirty Boulevard” alongside the Platters “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and then plays Kings of Leon?

Like, “Whistle Test’ it’s all the same (thinking). The criteria is, “Do I like this record?” If I like it, I play it. It is as simple as that.

How do you figure out the music mix? What in your mind says, “I can make this work?”

Usually it is some sort of connection or other. You have a new album in and there’s this track you want to play and it sort of reminds you of something else. You match them and they work. So you are making connections between something that just dropped onto your mat that morning with a track from an album you might have heard 20 years. You make that connection between them.

I’ve got the new Buddy Miller album “Written In Chalk” (New West). He and Robert (Plant) have recorded an old Lefty Frizzell song “What You Gonna Do, Leroy?” (written by Mel Tillis) So the natural thing is to match it with a Lefty Frizzell song. I did that with one of my favorites, “Always Late (With Your Kisses).”

Or there might be two tracks—old and new-- written by the same person. Randy Newman has a new album out “Hearts & Angels” and there’s a collection just released on Ace Records called “On Vine Street: The Early Songs Of Randy Newman.” So I linked “Hearts & Angels” from the new album with Cilla Black’s version of “I’ve Been Wrong Before.” I’ve always loved that Cilla track. Suddenly, here’s the moment to play it.

Your country show mixes country with Americana. Does country in the UK means something different than mainstream Nashville country.

What the Country Music Association awards as country music at the moment I don’t think is country music. It’s pop with pedal steel. The vast majority artists I play are more country than the people who are supposed to be country are at this moment.

Give me some examples?

There’s that East Nashville rebel spirit with Eric Brace & Peter Cooper (two veteran music journalist/musicians), and Todd Snyder. We have this amazing singer Diana Jones. Then there’s Kevin Gordon and Elizabeth Cook. I can’t understand for the life of me why Elizabeth Cook hasn’t been adopted by mainstream country (in the U.S.). She is as country as you can get.

You go to the Americana Music Association Awards and there’s Levon Helm, Jim Lauderdale, Steve Earle, John Hiatt, the top echelon (of the genre) who are proud to nail their flag to the Americana pole. They think that this is where authentic American music is being made. I strongly feel that too So that is what my country show represents. It is, what I truly believe, music that is unembarrassed about reaching down into its roots.

Would you play Taylor Swift?

I wouldn’t say I’d absolutely slam the door. I’ve played her once around the CMA Awards.

Sugarland, Kenny Chesney or Rascal Flatts?

Sugarland, yes. Sugarland is different. They have a number of tracks I really like particularly, “Steve Earle.” It’s brilliant. I have a strong regard for Rascal Flatts. I met them about seven years ago, and they were a bit like Nickelback. Kenny Chesney, I’m sorry.

Most mainstream American country acts think UK is a no-go zone.

The big American country artists are not successful here because, frankly, they don’t give a damn. Whereas the Americana artists come over regularly. What is happening in Europe and Britain is important to them and they come over and play. How many times has Steve Earle visited the UK and Europe in the last five years? He’s been here many times. The Dixie Chicks have been here two or three times. Keith Urban and Dierks Bentley have been here. Martina McBride is coming back soon. But then you run out of names.

At the CMA Awards in Nashville a few years ago, Allan Jackson was standing outside our studio while we were broadcasting live. Someone came out and said, “This is BBC Radio 2 and they are covering the awards. Would you like to say a word or two?” He replied, “Why?” That completely summed it up for me. And we would have loved to have done an interview with Allan Jackson.
